The Aviation Insurance Market
and Current Trends

Over the past two years, the aviation insurance market has shown one of the most radical and confusing changes in its history.  Aside from the current cycle perhaps only one other series of events has resulted in more fundamental change to the aviation insurance market. Both of these cycles have a significant and rapid contraction or expansion of available capacity in the market place in common.
In the late 1990’s Houston Casualty Company (HCC) acquired a significant number of U.S. aviation insurance underwriters and Managing General Agencies resulting in a sudden contraction of market capacity literally reducing the available markets by half.  Although that market consolidation in and of it self did not produce widespread hardening of rates, loss ratios of 3 to 1 experienced by insurers during that cycle was taking its toll . After HCC’s acquisitions, a brief period of stability occurred and while underwriting profits were nonexistent, investment profits were strong and helped make up the short fall.
The year 2000 brought the dot com bust and eroding investment profits. 2001 brought the events of 9-11 and the almost immediate exodus of a large number of insurers and re-insurers from the aviation market resulting in even less capacity in an already strained industry.
The storm had formed and a stunning correction occurred almost overnight resulting in premium increases to consumers market wide; some exceeding 100%.
