The North American Navion and the Republic Sea Bee

By: Norm Goyer

Just after WWII entered into the history books, two of our largest wartime aircraft companies were sitting with huge factories, bulging raw aluminum inventories, production lines and skilled aircraft workers. To add to the mix, a private aircraft boom was predicted which would “put an aircraft in every garage.” North American had been producing Mustangs, Texans and B-25 Mitchell bombers in huge numbers. Republic had been cranking out the P-47 Thunderbolt better known as the “Jug.” short for Juggernaut. Republic was ready as well as North American. Anticipating the coming private aircraft boom, North American designed and built the rock solid, fighter-looking Navion, ( North American aViatION.) The original Navion had a 185 hp Continental engine. Again lack of proper engines resulted in underpowered aircraft, but the airframe was bullet-proof and very STRONG. But it had consumer acceptance problems.

It sat high on its rugged landing gear. It had a sliding canopy, like the Mustang; so you had to climb over the side to enter both the front and rear seats. In other words, it was not lady like. Women just didn’t like climbing up over the wing and then over the side and into the cockpit. The Navion was much better designed for fighter pilots than women dressed for dinner. The Army Air Force bought 83 of the design designated as L-17s. North American knew they didn’t have a winner, like the Beechcraft Bonanza, which was loved by women due to its sexy looks and ease of entry.
